The Job Gym

The Job Gym programme helps Daniel brush up on his skills and land a new job

When Daniel Mills was looking to get back into work in the customer service sector, he was pointed in the direction of the Job Gym by Oldham Jobcentre Plus.

“I was referred for a John Lewis open day, where I was promised two weeks of training and guaranteed an interview with John Lewis at the end of the course.”

Daniel found the work skills course particularly useful in refreshing his CV and interview techniques.

“We did a lot of work on CVs, adding information that employers were looking for and removing information that really wasn’t necessary.”

Brushing up on interview techniques as part of the course is something that Daniel found useful when he went for an interview after completing the Job Gym programme. This resulted in a job offer at John Lewis.

“My favourite aspect of the training was brushing up on interview techniques.”

“I’d come out of a long-term position and straight into agency work so it’s been years since I’d had a proper, formal interview.”

This was particularly useful in helping Daniel navigate the differences between agency and permanent employment interviews.

“With agencies, it’s just ‘register your details and you’ve got the job’ so it was good to refresh on what to expect in an interview.”

“It was really helpful – for me, it was the most informative part.”

The course also helped Daniel to refresh his experience of working in a contact centre.

“The course was about what to expect in a call centre environment.”

“We also did some telephone calls on behalf of the Job Gym but it was to customers that were already interested, it wasn’t like cold calling.”

After completing the course, an interview was set up for Daniel at John Lewis.

“I was prepped on what questions they might ask and what assessment activities it might involve. I was a lot more comfortable when I went into my interview and it obviously worked - I got the job!”

“I’d recommend the Job Gym to anyone who is looking to get into employment, learn new skills or having trouble finding work.”
