Courses to help you get a job or get a better job
The Job Gym offers a number of government funded courses to improve your employment prospects and career progression opportunities. Most people are entitled to these courses free of charge, especially if you are claiming Job Seekers Allowance. Please check with us to see if you are eligible. These courses lead to qualifications that are accredited nationally and recognised by universities and colleges as well as by employers.
Joining the Job GymWhen you first come to the Job Gym you will be offered an Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) appointment where we will provide you with impartial information about what courses and qualifications may be suitable for your needs. Your personal training advisor will then agree with you an individual learning plan that will list the courses you should undertake in order to achieve your goals. This learning plan will be used to track your progress at the Job Gym.
Learn at your own paceAt the Job Gym, you will learn in one of our centres or at home or a combination of both. You visit the centre to work on your course as often as you like and you can study at a pace to suit you.
Skills for Life Courses
Skills for Life Certificates are available in adult literacy and numeracy at three levels:
- Entry Level 3
- Level 1 (equivalent to GCSE D grade)
- Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE A-C grade)
The level you aim for and amount of coaching you get depends on the level of skills you already have. We will give you an online assessment to see which level would be right.
Employability Skills courses
If you are looking for a new job then we can offer a range of courses in employability skills. This training will help you understand the key qualities that employers are looking for such as good timekeeping and being able to work well in a team. You will also learn job seeking techniques such as how to look for work and apply for jobs, as well as writing your CV and preparing for and performing well in job interviews.
BTEC Awards in employability skills include:
- Work skills – searching and applying for jobs, CV writing, interview techniques etc.
- Life skills – managing your money, working as a team, investigating your rights and responsibilities
- Everyday IT – beginners courses in IT (using applications, emails and the internet)
The ITQ Level 2 certificate shows that you have reached a nationally recognised standard in IT working with applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. You choose which skills you need to develop to help you in your own particular job and then follow a tailor-made programme that meets your individual needs. Any previous IT qualifications or experience you may already have will count towards an ITQ award.
The internationally recognised European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) Essentials is a great introduction to IT. You'll learn the basics of using your computer, the internet and email safely.
